My Favorite Places, Living on Hilton Head Island
Sometimes you just need an insiders opinion. Tom and I have lived here since 2003, we certainly haven’t been everywhere but we like to get out and about and we would love to share our favorites with you.
My husband and I are foodies, I hate to admit it but we watch the Food Network for recreation (he’s more compulsive, he works the Cooking Network also). The upside is that we are very comfortable entertaining (except for cleaning the house), the downside is that we are a bit on the picky side when we go out. Admittedly we are picky on the upper end, both of us are cost conscious enough that if we pay to go to an upscale restaurant and we are disappointed we are annoyed, we are less annoyed if our expectations are lower.
Our favorite Hilton Head restaurants
Lunch and Breakfast:
Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe – we have friends that are there almost every day. Sunrise Cafe is a local institution, I can never decide between their breakfast menu with their shrimp hash or their crab cakes egg benefict or the lunch menu with the tiny chopped salad or the black bean burger. It’s a local favorite, call me if you want to know which server to ask for.
Street Meet – the best hot dogs on the island, the wife of the owner was also from near Syracuse, NY and also went to VA Tech to school! They bring in my favorite hot dogs from Hoffmann’s, a German meat packer in upstate NY that uses natural ingredients and casings, these are the only hot dogs that I eat (we had them at a cook out the weekend that Tom and I got married). Get a combination plate of ‘Old Style hot dogs’ and onion strings and you will be very happy.
Hinoki Restaurant off New Orleans Rd is one of my favorite lunch treats, the bento box is a wonderful combination of rice, vegetables, fish chicken and vegetables. It is one of the best buys on the island.
We don’t go out for fine dining often, we live here so we are just ‘grabbing a bite to eat’ but I will share our impressions with you so long as you know that we don’t go out for ‘fine dining’ enough to have strong opinions:
The Boathouse – the Boathouse is actually on my lunch list also but they are definitely on my dinner list. Their Shrimp and Grits and the Seafood Chowder are among my favorites on the island, lunch or dinner. The food is good and the atmosphere for dinner cannot be beat, The Boathouse is located on the northside of the island looking over the Intracoastal Waterway and in one of the best spots of the island for viewing the sunset. Even if they are having a busy night they can give you a seat at the bar to have a libation and watch the sunset. A great favorite of ours.
