Fall is my favorite time of the year to live on Hilton Head Island. The weather is absolutely fabulous, skies are clear, humidity is low, the sun is shining and the island isn’t as busy as it is in the summer, not that I’m knocking the summer you understand, but fall is the best! Fall is the perfect time to play a little golf, enjoy our waterways in a kayak or canoe, ride a bike on our miles of bike paths or just lounge on the beach with a good book. My family likes to spend a day strolling around Beaufort or Bluffton, doing a little window shopping at the shops and galleries and enjoying lunch on the patio of one of the many great restaurants. Whatever you like to do to rest and relax you can find it here in the fall.
Fall is also the time for festivals and oyster roasts. We islanders like nothing more than getting out in the sunshine, enjoying a little good food and visiting with some of our neighbors or visitors. Here are some of the upcoming events:
Sept 21 The Italian Heritage Festival – if you like Italian Food this is the one for you!
Sept 26-29 LoCo Motion Walk for Breast Cancer – a three day event to raise funds to fight breast cancer.
Sept 28 Hilton Head Burgers and Brew Festival – who doesn’t love a good burger and a cold beer?
Oct 4 19th Annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival – you can never eat enough fresh shrimp.
Oct 13-20 Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival – includes kayak tours, fishing tournaments and more!
Oct 24-27 ImagiNATION 2013 – first annual Hilton Head Island Institute ideas festival.
Oct 25-Nov 3 Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours D’Elegance – one of our most popular annual events
Nov 8,9 & 10 Hilton Head Oyster Festival – what can I say, nothing better than shucking oysters in the sunshine!
There’s just so much to do in the fall!
Don’t forget to check with the Salty Dog or Captain Woody’s, they both have regular oyster roasts and Saturday afternoon events in the fall, Tom and I have been known to wander over to the Salty Dog to watch a little college football on a Saturday afternoon in the fall, I mean really, my favorite northern peeps are wearing jackets and gloves and raking leaves and I’m at the outdoor bar at the Salty Dog basking in the sun and watching my favorite college team (which is the VA Tech Hokies for those of you that don’t know me well, but my husband is a Clemson Tiger so it could be a long year this year).
The local Farmers Markets are another favorite for a stroll around (I love fresh tomatoes). The Hilton Head Farmers Market is Wednesday’s at Shelter Cove. The Bluffton Farmers Market is on Calhoun Street on Thursday afternoons. I’m going to take some time and look up some of the outdoor recreational opportunities coming up this fall. I know that there are a number of 5K run/walks because we have a RE/MAX Island Realty team that does some of them. We often go out and do the run and then enjoy breakfast or lunch at one of our favorite restaurants. I also saw an event coming up in October on Fripp Island called the ‘Inaugural Fall Migration Celebration’. This area is famous for it’s abundant wildlife and this could be a great opportunity to go up to Fripp Island and learn more about the bird life. Be sure to check back.
