Volunteer Opportunities on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton
I have a heart for charity. I contribute a part of each commission to the Children's Miracle Network, which is a RE/MAX sponsored charity, give to my church, help to raise funds to support a local elementary school teacher and single mom who has cancer and support local charities to help the disadvantaged. Together with some other wonderful people we had the great good fortune of raising over $9,000 for these charities this past year through commissions, a fundraising dinner and our Fall Oyster Roast. It is one of my goals to build my business in a way that my team can find ways to help older women that are struggling to pay the bills either because of low paying jobs, divorce or illness.
That's why I was so impressed when I read a recent column in Hilton Head Monthly, also featured in Lowcountry Weekly, that was written by Denise Spencer, the President and CEO of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry entitled 'There's an App for that...' In the article Denise talks about the pluses and minuses of all of the new technology like smart phones and tablets, such as access to information on the plus side, and problems with socialization, wasted time and deteriorating opportunities for underprivileged children without access to these devices on the minus side. It is a very impactful article.
Her recommendations are to support causes that assist people living in poverty, to find the time to volunteer and to pledge to match every dollar that you spend on technology with a contribution to charity. That's a pledge that I can enthusiastically support, I hope that you'll consider making the pledge yourself. It has two advantages, each of your technology purchases will be twice the cost which may give you pause to reflect on whether or not you really need that new gadget and it benefits others that can't afford those gizmos.
