Living on Hilton Head Island, Day Trips
You've made the move to Hilton Head Island and you're loving living here but you'd like to take a break from walking on the beach, riding bikes, playing golf and tennis and entertaining company and go on an adventure, or maybe you have family visiting that you'd like to show more of the area.  There are many great day trips from Hilton Head Island, whether you are interested in a little history (and there's alot of history in this area), a little food, or a little outdoor recreation there a some great options to tempt you.
Visit Olde Town Bluffton and take a stroll around this quaint village on the banks of the May River.  Bluffton's historic district features a variety of locally owned shops and restaurants with unique offerings from local craftsman and artists.  Take a walk down to the May River landing at the end of Calhoun Street to see the beautiful river vistas that make Bluffton famous and The Church of the Cross, constructed between 1854 and 1857.  Click here for a copy of the Bluffton Walking Tour Map.  Don't miss the Bluffton Oyster Company, where the locals get their oysters.  On Thursdays you can visit the Bluffton Farmers Market and sample some local fare.  The hours for the Farmers Market are 2-7pm and the market is seasonal, typically March to November, so check to make sure that it is open for your visit.  I like to go a little early and have lunch at my favorite Bluffton restaurant, The Cottage, on Calhoun Street.  Everything is good but my favorites are the Shrimp and Grits and the Seared Tuna Salad Nicoise, yummy!  They also offer tapas on Thursday afternoons when the Farmers Market is open.
 Fall Festival
Fall is a great time of year on the island.  There are great opportunities for outdoor recreation, the OLLI Institute at USCB is back in session and has a number of interesting offerings for expanding your mind.  The first annual ImagiNATION event sponsered by the Hilton Head Island Institute is this year and there are any number of smaller events at the local shopping areas.  Check out the calendar of fall events
Exploring Daufuskie Island for the Day
Start your day with a boat ride across the Calibogue Sound from Hilton Head Island, explore an island and learn the history of an island spanning hundreds of years, that's how you'll spend a day visiting Daufuskie Island.  You can cap it off with a walk on one of the most pristine beaches that you will ever see.  Daufuskie Island can only be reached by ferry and has a magical history that includes indians and settlers fighting for the right to call the island home, southern plantations growing indigo and cotton, Union Army occupation and freedmen communities with a rich Gullah/Geechee culture.  Don't miss lunch at one of Daufuskie's restaurants.  A day on Daufuskie Island is truly like taking a trip into the past.  Visit my Daufuskie Island Day Trip webpage for a tour map and information on the island's Gullah history.
